what DE you are using? And maybe your videocard brand...
But afair you need not to minimize the window before moving it to the other screen. Simply grab it by his title bar and move it. (Or click just somewhere in the window while pressing ALT and pull it over.)
It should adjust its size automatically. (I do not use dual screens very often.)
