Brian Murray proposed the following answer:
The output of both of those commands indicate that there is no file to
be played:

>From totem:

** Message: no file info
** Message: Error: Resource not found.
gstfilesrc.c(1046): gst_file_src_start (): /GstPlayBin:play/GstFileSrc:source:
No such file "/home/deepan/%U"

>From vlc:
libdvdread: Can't stat %f
No such file or directory
libdvdnav: vm: failed to open/read the DVD
[00000414] access_directory access error: %f: No such file or directory

You should try playing a video file with those applications.
