Tom proposed the following answer:
Ok, so you haven't installed Ubuntu yet and are just running it off the
LiveCd? Please go up to the top taskbar and click on
Applications - Accessories - Terminal
and into the terminal/command window/console type
sudo fdisk -l
note the "-l" is a lower-case "-L". The "sudo" command will want you to
type in your normal user password, not your SuperUser/Root one. To
check up on what commands do before typing them in try typping a " -h"
after them to get a quick help cheat-sheet on how to use the command,
for example try typing in
sudo -h
fdisk -h
please let us know the output from the "sudo fdisk -l" command. I like
the way you want to setup your partitions and think i can help you set
them up properly and then help to install Ubuntu to try to get the best
performance out of it and make it robust (especially for keeping all
your data and settings safer)
It would also be good if you could give us the output of
free -m
because the size best for swap is almost entirely dependant on how large your ram size is

Thanks and regards from
Tom :)
