Peter is still having a problem:
No success with that :-

peter@peter-desktop:~$ cd /dev
peter@peter-desktop:/dev$ /sbin/./MAKEDEV -n update dvd
.udevdb or .udev presence implies active udev.  Aborting MAKEDEV invocation.
peter@peter-desktop:/dev$

but

growisofs -Z /dev/scd0 -dvd-video /home/peter/temp


seems to work . Thanks Larry
