I am using Ubuntu 9.04(updated from Intrepid).My problem grown when I was in intrepid.
I am a university student and we have cable connected Local Area Network in university.
At first we used wired broadband Internet connection that requires only IP Address and MAC Address.
Now we shifted to the broadband connection that requires a user-name and password,i installed my connection in "DSL" tab in network connections applet or by "pppoeconf" command, i am not sure what is the name of this connection type: may be DSL .
i was able to browse LAN when using IP & MAC required connection.some days before shifting into DSL i installed some packages from synaptic(with some firewall tools, i can't remember their names) and after that my LAN connection became disabled and till now.when i click on places>network it shows http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=30629724&l=aa73b49dee&id=1210962009
when i click on windows network, it shows http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=30629725&l=bc8ae74667&id=1210962009

when i click on the applet it shows 
"Wired Network
Device not managed"
when i right click and then select"connection information" it shows 
"No valid active connections found!" though i am using my active DSL internel connection.
