When i said "I would also stick with 32bit Ubuntu, the main advantage is
when you need to use over 3.5Gb ram" i meant "the main advantage with
the 64bit version is if you need to use over 3.5Gb ram" but of course
64bit version might also be an advantage when you're using vmware.

Always before installing any version of linux i would try to run a
LiveCd session just to see how it looks.  I might then compare that with
LiveCd's of a couple of other versions but mostly because i have quite a
few of these cds now.

I kinda assume that what you are doing now is an experiment to see how
it goes before risking doing something really wrong with the newer
larger hard-drive.  It seems like a good plan :)  If you did this with
Windows and then plugged the test hard-drive into a totally different
machine and tried to boot-up from it you'd get a lot of grumbles but
with linux you might only have some issue about the graphics card maybe
and everything else would probably be fine :)  Not that it's
recommended.  A fresh install is usually better ;)
