actionparsnip proposed the following answer:
Log a bug with nautilus. As long as you are unmounting the partition
before detatching then you are doing it right. Do not wrench the drive
out without unmounting as you will upset the OS. Old versions of Linux
(2.2 kernel is particularly poinient here) would simply hang as it
waited for the device to respond.

The outputs you have are very thorough and should speed the resolution
along. They wil hopefully be resolved by the time Karmic is released
officially to the masses.
