actionparsnip proposed the following answer:
you need to boot to recovery mode for your kernel (press esc when grub
loads and select recovery) then you can select fix graphics.

Sounds like you have upgraded your kernel and your drivers for video
have not upgraded along. Once you get an X server you will have failsafe
video drivers which will need reconfiguring.
