I had a similar problem.
I installed DeVeDe using the synaptic package manager.
With this package I was able to make a .iso dvd image.
I was then able to use brasero to burn that .iso file.
I have not used dvdauthor but you might try doing it in two steps also: first make .iso then burn it.
