Mine disappeared last week, after an update & upgrade.
However, the network and power and Bluetooth applets also disappeared!
In my case, I was able to fix it by doing
- right click on top panel
- Add to Panel
- Notofocation Area
and these applets reappeared.
Don't know if it's as simple for you, but ...
