Re: Disc Wiping/Degaussing

Bulk degaussers may render them useless, by overwriting any sync tracks. (OK
for floppies and tape, not hard drives).

There are several standards, and approved wiping products out there. But if
you want a free one, look into DBAN http://www.dban.org/ which is also
supplied as part of Heidi eraser http://eraser.heidi.ie/. Recent research
indicates that you won't be able to realistically recover anything after one
wipe pass on modern drives, so two or three passes should be more than
enough. But you might need to do more to keep any auditors and managers
happy that a standard has been met. Some info in
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-computer_forensics#Disk_cleaning_utilitiesand
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disk_wiping

Erasing is relatively simple. Providing an audit trail to prove you've
erased them is more time-consuming.

Not sure this is the right mailing list though!
