[Bug 245337] Re: \cdot and \times appear the same in equations

Linux mint homepage states for Linux mint 16+:

> Recommended packages are no longer automatically installed in Linux
Mint. To install a package with its recommended packages, use the
command "apt install packagename --install-recommends". (
http://www.linuxmint.com/rel_petra_mate.php )

This seems to cause it. I'll file a new ticket with the mint bug
tracker.

Title:
\cdot and \times appear the same in equations

Status in “lyx” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: lyx

When editing equations, the \cdot and \times symbols look the same. Both look like a x. I tried changing the screen font but they still look the same. I am using Lyx 1.5.3-1 on Hardy.
Lyx 1.5.3 on Windows does not have this problem. \cdot looks like a dot and \times looks like a x.

I also checked with Lyx 1.5.5 on Fedora 9. The problem does not
  appear there.
