How does one allow security access from command line to the "/var/tmp"?

I have two machines with audacity installed and both show the same crash
error (laptop with ubuntu gnome 14.04 32 bits and pc with ubuntu studio
14.04). None of those have ntfs partitions plugged or connected. After
clicking OK on the "Register Effects" window, the program won't even
open.
