Since it looks like 
 - the format of my original problem file upload is wrong (it is stored as an HTML file; I can't get it to work)
 - this behaviour is documented, and maybe LyX is not ultimately intended to shield users from all LaTeX issues
 - @andrikos has spelled out how to do what I was trying to do. Thank you!!
 - it's been $>$ a decade
 - I never reported it upstream?
 

I propose to close this! Invalid or Fix Released?

  any multiline equation inside a table in Lyx 1.50 breaks

Status in lyx package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  The following/attached trivial LyX file gives a bunch of errors when compiling. It simply contains any multline equation (eqnarray) inside a table (tabular) environment.
  The result of exporting latex also produces a broken latex file.

  Here is my  lyx -version:
