The size of a notification bubble is dependent on the size of your
standard application font. If you have a small font, you'll get small
bubbles.

Another part of "improving the appearance and behavior" is catching your
eye, just enough to be noticed, when a bubble appears. This might
involve, for example, an animation that is more prominent than just
fading in.
