read that line again, now consider that all popular os' have this
function. Windows, osx, linux, android, iphone, etc. etc.
Think of how you record volume in a record studio. Do you go around
and adjust the volume on each instrument? Or do you use a mixer
because it gives you all control as close to you finger tips as
possible. For the same reason a global volume and mixer are good,
windows has a dock bar and osx has the tray. Full control at the palm
of your hands not only works but is a hard proposition to turn down.
Oh! another example, Canonicals Landscape. In networks there are
literally hundreds of applications that try to imitate what a mixer or
dockbar do so well.
