Because it depends on whether it's for selecting a known item with a few
characters, or for something more complex.

If it's for selecting a known item with a few characters, you are
probably looking at the results while typing, not at the search text. In
that case, the interface shouldn't expect you to remember the state of
the search text, and should instead clear the text (not the selection,
just the text) after a pause. Gnome Do, Nautilus, and the GTK file
dialogs all get this wrong.

If it's for something more complex, you usually concentrate on getting
your text right first, and then examine the results, and then maybe go
back and refine the text. In that case, there's no benefit to clearing
the text, and it may even be annoying.
