An upgrade to simply zooming in and out would be semantic zoom, i.e. stepped
zooming.

Semantic Scaling / Zooming can be implemented in many different ways, but my
favourite thought is to zoom out for preview/thumb/symbol/icon mode and to
zoom in & select for interaction mode, if this makes sense to anybody..
