When the panel is set to transparent, the menus do lookout of place. But
if these are transparent, then they would be hard to read if an
application is open. You can set them to translucent through Ubuntu
Tweak, and it doesn't look right.
Ideally, I would like the menus to pick up on the colour of the
background behind the menu and make the background the same colour,
rather than set them to transparent/translucent.

the main reason i see for having transparent indicator menus is visual
consistency:
finally, we'd have one unified look for all of Unity, of which
Indicator Menus imo are a part.
