This is also a pet peeve of mine :-) I filed
https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/884123 which will allow people to
easily experiment with new home screen implementations. I am not sure if
this is gonna be too technically disruptive to the codebase for 12.04
though (being an LTS). I'll talk it over with Neil and Gord and update
the bug accordingly.
