Re: rotating side bar

KDE activities is a good example. Realistically, this is something that would need a simple dialogue for new users to set up. As well as an on/off dialogue, it could use the dash categories as a starting point so a category could be chosen for each desktop, and any new relevent applications could be added to the appropriate launcher.

I think the workspace management could do with a little tweaking for this to work, but I think this was one of the things that was being improved in Precise anyway.

i like the idea of the ability to customize each workspace for different activities.

that way i could pin just the necessary amount of apps for each workspace's respective launcher.

would be nice to also rename the workspaces you want. kde activities is probably the best live example we have now.

Its an interesting idea. Scrolling the mouse is used to change desktop.
So, am I right in thinking you want a unique set of icons in the
launcher for each desktop? For example, one desktop for work, one for
games, one for multimedia etc?

If so, I like the idea. If not then I think it would add more clutter to
the dash, though an easier way of using quicklists to add additional
items would be handy.

thanks for the answer.
It also raises lots of questions.
* Are there four sides? Do the sides have meaning?
four or how many you want, it is a virtual solid, not a wooden one :-)
They have icons for the respective desktop: four desktop.
* How would the user rotate the sides (we're running out of key
combinations, or I'm running out of fingers)
scroll on mouse for example
* How would it work with transparency settings.
well, the use could be simple: the bar is the same as now, appearing
as it is now if you do nothing. If your mouse pointer goes on the
bottom of the bar, then it becomes 3D and by scrolling the mouse you
can change side/desktop.
* Would it be useful if a users adjusted the launcher icon size
sure
* What would it look like when the user turned autohide off [1]
the bar would be, as written a 2D bar, unless you don't put your mouse
pointer on the bottom of it, then it becomes 3d....
* How would it work when an application had to display the Urgent Animation
the same as now.

3D is an addon that could appear/disappear on demand, showing icons on
each desktop...

[1] With wide monitors, I think there's going to be a desire for the
launcher to be displayed all the time with the launcher as the left
edge of the display area.

PS. I've been monitoring this list and this is the first time I've
replied. Feel free to smack me on the knuckles if I'm out of line.
