Re: design, give a suitable direction forward
*The initial design* put the Launcher to the left to fit the Ubuntu BFB
button nicely. The window controls got aligned to the right of the BFB. It
worked quite fine this
way<http://api.viglink.com/api/click?format=go&key=cdee124b11d6baacda6c3e29b12e23dc&loc=http%3A%2F%2Fbfiller.wordpress.com%2F2011%2F01%2F13%2Funity-2d%2F&v=1&libid=1334272392039&out=http%3A%2F%2Fbfiller.files.wordpress.com%2F2011%2F01%2Funity-2d-panel.png&ref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.hu%2Fimgres%3Fum%3D1%26hl%3Dhu%26client%3Dubuntu%26sa%3DN%26channel%3Dcs%26biw%3D1024%26bih%3D514%26tbm%3Disch%26tbnid%3Dy_kn3WQ6btLnzM%3A%26imgrefurl%3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fbfiller.wordpress.com%2F2011%2F01%2F13%2Funity-2d%2F%26docid%3DSbgqm5Z-Vv6ioM%26imgurl%3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fbfiller.files.wordpress.com%2F2011%2F01%2Funity-2d-panel.png%26w%3D1280%26h%3D800%26ei%3DUGGHT5PiLs7MswbA0onBBA%26zoom%3D1%26iact%3Dhc%26vpx%3D307%26vpy%3D148%26dur%3D52%26hovh%3D177%26hovw%3D284%26tx%3D107%26ty%3D105%26sig%3D109924347144197367674%26page%3D8%26tbnh%3D124%26tbnw%3D198%26start%3D80%26ndsp%3D12%26ved%3D1t%3A429%2Cr%3A1%2Cs%3A80%2Ci%3A338&title=Unity%202D%20%C2%AB%20bfiller%20blog&txt=&jsonp=vglnk_jsonp_13342723954291>
.
*The issue* came in when we decided to put the BFB onto the Launcher, and
move the window controls to the place of the original BFB. With this
alignment, the reason to have the launcher fixed under the top bar does not
make sense anymore.
*What could we do about it?* Well, the first thing came to my mind is
having the launcher on the
bottom<http://shuffleos.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/unity_shell_rotated.jpg>.
That way having it fixed would not cause any visual inconsistency, and it
also looks good. But... many people prefer it on the left. I personally put
my Windows tasbar on the left also because it just makes the desktop feel
better aligned on widescreen monitors.
*What if we want to keep the launcer on the left?* I think we could still
expose it way from the top of the screen to the bottom. The way it overlaps
also the top bar, when invoked, but that would be just ugly. What I think
the best solution is that having the launcher take the whole height and cut
its width from the
desktop<https://launchpadlibrarian.net/82706701/shouldbe.png>when set
to always visible. When set to autohide, it sould make the whoe
desktop could slide 32px to the right when the Launcher comes in. (Notice
the right 32 px of the desktop is cut off on the attached file.) Just like
the taskbar for iOS, just set to always visible by default.
Thanks for your time.
