You can use the attached hacky script to stop it. Put it somewhere in your
PATH, make it executable and run:

gnome-session-stop-app unity-2d-panel


that, and at some point i needed to do the same for GNOME Panel, so i used a brute workaround:
sudo chmod -x /usr/bin/gnome-panel

but i believe Aurélien's methode would be the first method of choice..
