Exactly... Also I'm pretty sure that I tired some time ago one USB
volume (Sandisk) that had a custom icon that was working correctly in
unity.
Howver I don't know how it's actually defined, since there's nothing on
the root directory.

However, if GVolume supports that, unity will work as expected.
I would expect Unity to verify that the icon resolution (if not color palette) matches the requirements of the rest of the shell.

Filing a bug in that regard will ensure that the implementation is discussed in more details, and importantly, let designers verify the UX requirements as well.
