Are you sure that the mail buffers were written to disk?  You can check the
*Messages* buffer to see what was actually done.  Set the variable
`vm-verbosity' to 10 to make sure that you don't miss any messages.

It might also help to wait for 90 seconds after you fix the summary to make
sure that the cached-data is written into headers.  (It shouldn't be
necessary in 8.2.0a, but just to make sure.)

After that, visit the mail folder as a plain text file and check if the
cached-data headers have been changed.

If it still doesn't work, then you are facing a bug.  Please try to produce
a small folder that reproduces the problem, and do M-x vm-submit-bug-report.
