I don't think, that hiding is a good idea - users may think that it is not running and start more instances of WI.
Either the connection should be rechecked or user should close the indicator via Quit menu

  When there is a connection error, it is not possible to dismiss this
  (and its accompanying obnoxious red alert icon) via any method
  available to the user.
