[Bug 1191655] Re: Website Frontpage needs some rework

There is a Welcome and another Welcome - but just a single very first
Welcome. For the very first we could use a Lot the big MagicStick and
cause a Lot of wow but after knowing that Show the Welcome should be
more moderate and informative. I understand the present FrontPage to be
a Kind of moderate and informative Page and also then I aggree with that
the FrontPage's ArtWork need Improvement. I think also the old ArtWork
IS much better. There can exist a strong Reason to replace it: (IF) we
have a better (or similar good)!

I wondered a Lot why these Guys, which are at present on FrontPage, have
green Eyes! No Idea from which Planet they are from but they look surely
alien and rather repullsive at me. I still wonder if they are ET,
demonic or just rouged. While the left Guy's Skin looks unhealthy the
other Guys have also round Button-Eyes. If you see a Man you focus on
Face to rate him. If you see the Face you focus on the Eyes to rate him.
That Men their Figures are fine, the Face somewhat strange and their
Eyes totally alien.

There is a Welcome ... and another Welcome! For the very first Welcome a simlpe Cookie-Check (if not exist) can catch all real first Visits to start a (lesser) short Introduction-Tour with a Lot large good graphical Stuff (eg scolling at a large Screen-Shot from Map in Game) with Text-Boxes with small Explanations like ("build Ships to colonize foreign Isles ...") ("your Forges produce the Tools you need to expand").

Suggestions for the "Hello, again" FrontPage:
I made good Experiences as User with a Game-Site, which uses randomly Portraits from alternating Characters known/used inside its Game. Thus the FrontPage looks much lesser tedious to iteratively visiting Users, caused by (decellerated) blunt Adaption: each Time a User visit the Page he see another Portrait --- or think so the first 100 Visits. If we adapt same Idea (still without having same Amount/Quality for Portraits) we could use HQ-Closer-Up Blender-Renderings of all different Type of Workers we got for the Tribes in Front of their concerning Sites .. eg the ShipWright in Front of a Ship-Construction -- that Blender-Stuff used for creating the Animations.

There is a just seeming Contradiction between 'I want a large "ArtWork"
at FrontPage' and 'I don't want to much large Images "wasting" the
UserInterFace': if that large ArtWork gets uses as BackGround and Text
put at. No Problem to fade out Text or focus on Text so can both be at
same Position. Style of HP keeps with integer. Brief: imagine the old
ArtWork as BackGround for the Welcome-Box at FrontPage. If we get
"Scenery-Renderings with Worker and Site" (with existing Material
perhaps a lesser challenging Task) we get really good looking ArtWork
for the FrontPage. We can reuse them to related News -- eg if Ships in
next Release get reported the ShipWright at his Site would be the proper
Scenery from explained Scenery-Set. An Emblem for WL-Releases (perhaos
with Release-Number) could round up that Image to represent the News
Main-Information.

Title:
  Website Frontpage needs some rework

Status in The Widelands Website:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
My gripes with the current website is this:

  - The image does not convey a good introduction to the game. The old screenshot was much better suited for that particular task.
  - The text is slightly verbose - I think it could be shorter. It also talks to much about Settlers 1 and 2 and it does not contain the "building up instead of ripping down" RTS mentality of Widelands.

This bug report is for discussion - I plan to collect ideas here and
redo the intro part of the site later this week. Comments?
