[Bug 1465253] [NEW] Black screen freeze in Xubuntu 14.10.2 LTS and 15.04 with suspend on lid close

Public bug reported:

Black screen freeze behaviour consistently persists in Xubuntu 14.10.2
LTS and 15.04 when laptop lid close is used to suspend on Dell Laptop
D400 (and other models, see related bugs).

The "Suspend on Laptop close" feature worked correctly with 12.04 LTS.

The issue remains that the laptop crashes when the lid is closed for
suspend and the machine does not switch off. A frozen cursor on a black
screen can be seen when the laptop is re-opened.

Both 14.10.2 LTS and 15.04 were fresh installs from ISO.

This bug has been reported several times previously in earlier versions.
See bugs #1303736, #1357090 and others.

The workaround of clicking on the logoff "Suspend" button every time
remains very inconvenient.
