I can only answer on your first question.
When the timestep decreases twice, seems, the bug does not appear any more.
But it is not a guarantee that it is resolved. Who knows..

  clumps explosion

Status in Yet Another Dynamic Engine:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Clumps exhibit  a strange behaviour, test is script/test/clump-hopper-viscoelastic.py
  But, with examples/buldozer/buldozerVKT.py all is ok. 
  (Both used same contact model). 
  So, something is wrong with inertia tensor or aspherical integrator, me seems.
