You are right, compaction (can) generates homogeneity problems.
Personally, I use expansion most of the time.
For porosity in subdomains : yes, it is interesting. This is one of the
things I have put in the triangulation package (also computes fabric,
stress, strain, coordination number, etc. in subdomains).
