1) Not sure what Euler's theorem is. What I can tell is the equations
are exact, just like having rotation matrices R1 and R2, then defining
the rotation 1->2 as inv(R1)*R2. Don't worry about quaternions, they are
just computationaly efficient, they don't change the maths.

Not sure which question you refer to in 271097, overall I would say the
model we are speaking about is close to Potyondy & Cundall for the main
equations, it only differs in the logic of how friction and cohesion are
combined.
