Any suggestion on how/where it should be explained is welcome, since it is a very frequent question.

2.a) yes
2.b) yes
3) the code looks ok, I did not try the script. Most likely the top/bottom plates are not moving (should they?) or the engine is idle hence not updating the strain values.
