Akm gave more information on the question:
I think that might have been the problem. I had given the tensile strength as too high and that has created a lot of problems for me. How do I know which version of Yade I am using?  I had downloaded the package from https://github.com/yade/trunk.
 So it shows the version as Yade unknown. Should I be downloading it from somewhere else?
