Re: "Flat usage" of Zim-Wiki without a nested structure?

Aha, ok. Well, I used to but then I wanted to make links to headings, and I think it doesn’t work does it?
That was the reason to create a new page for every small bit of information.

Daniel,

If I am assuming your process correctly, you may be consider aggregating more information within notes, i.e.:

Instead of individual files for

* Topic
    * Source 1
    * Source 2
    * Etc

Include all of the relevant info within a single note and use headers to organize the info. That is, take the filing structure, and turn it into headers.

Best,

Alec

Hi Murat

Thanks a lot!

Yes you’re right about the structure and the tags.
Perhaps I need to find a good middle course.

The idea of the flat structure without a tree arouse today, and I had the same problem I wrote about it some weeks ago : inserting links:

When I’m somewhere in the notebook, in a note, and want to cite a source of a book, then I need to insert a link. And this looks like the following for example:

And he said, that «Max Weber was a nice guy» (Qualitative Research:Literature:Kuckartz Udo 2011)

Then I always have to shorten the link to: (Kuckartz 2011)

After doing this today many times the idea emerged that I could change to no tree, just flat. That means I would not have these linking «problems».
Yes I know, it’s not really a problem;-) But sometimes it’s quite a drag to edit every link manually.

Best,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,
my view on this is: The less structure you have on your tree, the more you need to work with tags to find your information.
But that does not mean that you should not use tags if you have a logical tree structure ;)
See my earlier posts on this topic.
For example, the "getting things done" idea has the inbox for topics which don't fit into a structure (yet).
And again, the more you use tags, the faster you find the right information.
That's why I created the "Search tagged pages" plugin to support both, a flat inbox and a structured tree.
While writing this, I think I should rename the plugin to "Find tagged pages" to better show what it is meant for ;)

Murat

Hi Alec

Thanks for your information. Yes I’ve already enabled the tags plugin.
My question was more about the phylosophy rather than the technical aspects.

I’m not sure if it really makes sense if I had a flat structure.
Ah, I could make a copy of the notebook and test it. Perhaps I’ll be happier than with my current tree.

Best,
Daniel

Daniel,

There is a plugin for organizing your page index by tags. Here is the info online<http://zim-wiki.org/manual/Plugins/Tags.html>. Otherwise you can press F1 to open the help in zimwiki and find it under plugins.

Enable it in your preferences and there will e a tags tab on the left beside index.

Regarding the tree structure, just put all of the text files in the main directory of your notes directory instead of nesting them.

Best,

Alec

Hello everybody

Is there anybod who uses Zim-Wiki without a tree structure of pages? I mean, instead of a tree on the left side one could have all notes in one column but work with tags for example.

What do you think about this ?
My problem is very often that I really can’t find the correct item for my new subitem. Very often an item could fit in more than one position in the tree.
And another problem I could solve: my problem with the link text I mentioned recently. Without a tree structure every link would have «the right» link text for me.

Mhm, a bit confused if it could help.

Thanks
Daniel
