I am able to produce an assertion in xqdb on ubuntu 10.04 64bit.

Query:
for $x in (1,2,3)
let $y := $x+1
return $y

Protocol:
./bin/xqdb -f -q debugger.xq
Communication port: 28028
Zorba executable:   ./bin/zorba
Zorba arguments:    -d -f -q debugger.xq
