It certainly is an idea worth exploring further, Windows Explorer has certainly displayed metadata for years so it's by no means a new or unique concept.

Often the actual file name is unrelated to the metadata (track1.mp3 etc..) and so it would be very useful in those situations to be able to view the metadata directly within the nautilus windows without having to look into file properties.

In other contexts though it might be annoying/intrusive/waste of space to have metadata displayed, so it would be helpful if Nautilus was context aware, and only displayed metadata when appropriate, such as inside ~/music, or in folders where there was metadata to display.

One could argue for keeping functions seperated - file manager vs music manager, but simply from a file identification perspective it would be good to be able to at least display metadata in Nautilus.

If you are looking for an 'easy' way to tag files though, surely a well integrated fingerprinting system is going to be as simple as is gets. Right click a file (or interact with it somehow that brings up the option,) select "Automatically fill metadata" - or something more elegant and user friendly, and it just happens.

There are fingerprinting programs available in the repos, but they could do with a bit of love in the UI department.

Looking into the future of the semantic desktop though, isn't the plan to move away from file/folder mentality, rendering Nautilus largely redundant?
Maybe we should be thinking about a more global system for dealing with metadata, or at lease one that doesn't need to have a nautilus window open.

After yet another websearch on the topic, i came to find nautilus columns, which is not yet in the repositories. At least so, we are able to see the metadata as columns in nautilus.

With ongoing discussions about how to handle context and metadata better for the future of the semantic desktop, doesn't it make sense to think about handling that kind of stuff directly in nautilus?
