Using Karmic I am not using 64 bit, just
linux-image-2.6.31-21-generic. I forgot to mention, here is a line
from my /etc/default/grub file that is relevant.

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="ipv6.disable=1 i8042.nomux nomodeset
acpi_backlight=vendor quiet splash"
