Message #00468
CPU and overall system temperature in UL30Jt
Hello all and happy holidays.
What's the idle CPU temperature for your machines in Ubuntu 10.04..12.10 and how hot will the CPU get when you e.g. compress 1G of random data with gzip?
dd if=/dev/random bs=1M count=1000 | gzip > /dev/null
I've been recently upgrading a 10.04 system to 12.04 for a friend of mine and the figures we got were horrible - 90 °C (194 °F) while gzipping the home folder. I was also told that now just browsing in firefox (Intel HD video card running only, looks like bumblebee has taken care of that) would heat the CPU to 75 °C (167 °F).
It looks like there weren't many complaints about high CPU temperature for UL30 devices so has anybody here experienced anything like this? It looks like a hardware issue to me now (e.g. thermal grease stopped doing anything useful) but if somebody found software solution to this, I am all ears.
