I've been recently upgrading a 10.04 system to 12.04 for a friend of
mine and the figures we got were horrible - 90 °C (194 °F) while
gzipping the home folder. I was also told that now just browsing in
firefox (Intel HD video card running only, looks like bumblebee has
taken care of that) would heat the CPU to 75 °C (167 °F).

We finally got the laptop disassembled and found that the thermal grease
turned into powder and the fan was struggling to push the air through
seemingly free grill clogged by the dust.
Now the system is running @ 45°C idle with around 50°C under moderate load.
If you are disassembling the device make sure you check which screws go
where. The publicly available disassembly instructions don't have the
correct screw type specified for all the models.
