Public bug reported:

The sound applet is missing some functionality. Middle click does not
mute, nor does double clicking on the applet bring up the channels.

As a side note: is it possible to add an option to use the old sound
applet? Having the sound control integrated into the applet seems a bit
too much, at least for me. Having the option to keep it a simple a
volume control applet is very appealing.
