This has been a perpetual problem for me with Kubuntu. I have several
different versions (10.x 11.x) on several different PC's and when ever
Skype plays a notification there is about a 1 in 100 chance the computer
will lock and need rebooted.

The same goes for the desktop effects. About once a day in normal use
the computer locks up and needs a reboot. Normally using proprietary
drivers would fix it but I don't have them for my laptop so I have to
stop everything doing transparency or anything like that.

I have to say these to problems put most people who try Ubuntu off it
for life. They are problems that should be solved. It's so unnecessary.
It's not as if pulseaudio or desktop effects were bringing anything much
to the party other that M$ like feature bloat, unreliability and
clutter.
