So, are you taking the long way around to telling me this is not a
Compiz bug, but outdated VBoxGuestadditions, breaking 3d hardware
acceleration?

still shouldn't Compiz just back out and put the desktop back onto
metacity, rather than segfaulting and leaving me hangin'?
