[Bug 851667] [NEW] compiz crashes when high CPU load and window decorations are lost/strange window behaviour
Public bug reported:
When I have high I/O and CPU load - pls also see following top output -,
for example a complicated MySQL query, compiz crashes, mostly when
switching between workspaces, but sometimes also under other conditions.
The window decorations are lost, strange foreground/background bahaviour
of the windows, etc. (pls also see the attached screenshot).
top - 09:58:48 up 57 min, 4 users, load average: 2.81, 2.87, 2.41
Tasks: 207 total, 4 running, 203 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie
Cpu(s): 4.9%us, 0.8%sy, 0.0%ni, 37.0%id, 57.2%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st

Swap: 9871900k total, 0k used, 9871900k free, 1433404k cached
I found some suggestions to e.g. run compiz --replace from a terminal,
but what in the end really worked for me is to choose
System/Settings/Layout (hope this is the correct english term for
that...), observe that under Visual Effects "None" is set and change it
back to "Normal". Sometimes compiz successfully restarts, sometimes it
won't do so on the first try, but at least everything will go back to
"normal", without compiz. Of course, in some cases, I can't use the
panel anymore and therefore only restarting gdm from the command line
solves the problem.
