I would say the main reason why the packages become orphaned is the lack
of time of the original maintainer.

Yes.

It will pull libmagick++ automatically upon installation. In the case if
cuneiform is dynamically linked against libmagick++ and it does not find
it at run time it will just bail out and refuse to run at all.
