[Bug 351491] Re: Display preferences should be discoverable via the "Change desktop background" window

Primary monitor support has improved, both in gnome-panel and in unity,
and it can now be configured in the gnome-display-properties applet,
which should take care of the underlying issues described here.

The issue of having the applet functionality available from the desktop
context menu seems to have improved. When you launch the background
settings dialog there is now a 'All Settings' button on the top, which
takes you to a page of multiple configuration utilities including the
one for 'Displays'.

So I think this can be closed. A lot has changed with the introduction
of Unity though, so it's worth re-examining this workflow again in light
of that and filing new bugs (against unity) if there are still issues.

** Changed in: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu)
       Status: Triaged => Fix Released

Title:
Display preferences should be discoverable via the "Change desktop
  background" window

Status in “gnome-control-center” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

  USE CASE

User boots with a monitor attached and Ubuntu decides that the
external monitor is the Primary monitor. Gnome panels attach
themselves to the external screen. User disconnects from external
screen (which I do at least 5 times a day) and discover that a) I
cannot access the GNOME panels and worse ) I cannot access the
"Display - Change screen resolution" applet either.

There are clearly many ways of attacking this:

  - Can we make the Display Screen Resolution applet functionality
(where you can manipulate where the screens are) visible via the
"Change Desktop Background" window. At least when a user cannot see
the standard GNOME panels - they can still unattach the additional
  monitor.

  - Can we introduce the concept of primary and secondary monitors and
allow a user to state which one is which. (Auto detection of the most
commonly used one would be great too)

  - Should the right click on the desktop really be named - CHANGE
DESKTOP BACKGROUND - can we use something more generic?
