Posts are moderated for non-members, but AFAIK anyone can post to the
ML, and if members are fast enough to let the messages through, it
should be almost transparent.

Sure, it's far from being an optimal solution, but that's a start.

@Florian: could you please investigate whether it's possible to make the
ML more permissive for non members?
