Re: Desktop virtualization
Hi,
Just wanna pitch in and say that we've also been testing RedHat Enterprise
Virtualization since 2.x and now on 3.x.
For our use case the 2.x with the Windows based manager has been quite bad,
especially that we tried to use their RESTful API which was a wrapper for
their powershell tools.
A lot has improved since then, and with the Linux manager things are
working relatively nicely.
As for SPICE and GPU usage, it doesn't. Right now there is no 3D
acceleration either on the server side, or on the client side. There are
some plans of adding either an OpenGL passthrough so beefier "thin" clients
to render 3D locally, and some other plans for using techniques similar to
VirtualGL to render 3D on the server side.
All the encoding etc are done on the CPU currently.
As an alternative to Proxmox, Ganeti (http://code.google.com/p/ganeti/)
could also be used, though it can be a bit intimidating to setup at first
compared to Proxmox. They have recently added Spice support (version 2.6.0).
Best,
Attila
