Thank you for your advice.  However, after your input and that of another launchpad friend, some testing showed that the output size, which wants to be considerably larger than 52 megapixels, is using up all real ram.
I wonder if Hugin will be modified soon to utilize virtual memory in addition to real memory, so that smaller capacity systems can still, albeit slowly (lol), process large panoramas.  Thanks again. :-)

There shouldn't be a memory problem with such a small (52 megapixel
output) project. This looks like a bug with enblend or with the
particular build you are using.

This is the only oddity in the log:
  enblend: warning: input images to small for coarse mask; switching to fine mask

If the problem is with mask generation, it would be interesting to know
if it goes away if you disable mask optimisation altogether, i.e. add
--no-optimize in the 'blender options' before stitching.

  105.  Input photos are 2272 x 1704 uncompressed .tiff files.
