FW: Linux hybrid graphics card
As I understand it there are two options :-
1. Install closed source binary driver from NVidia and have GPU on 100% of the time.
2. Install noveau open source driver and have possibility of :-
2.1 Intel GMA + NVidia GPU for CUDA/OpenCL.
2.2 Just Intel GMA with NVidia GPU turned off / powered down ?
NVidia have stated they do not intend to support Optimus for Linux.
I think people are hoping to at some point have a runtime switch similar to either the old manual user switching or the automatic Windows Optimus switching supported in noveau.
There appear problems with the design of X Windows and the fact the the NVidia code is closed source however, so this may never happen ?
So the answer to his problem would appear to be install the closed source binary driver ? However this will result in poor battery life.
Correct me if I'm wrong as I'm a relative linux noob and not an expert on the Noveau code.
regards

You are not really answering him.
He wants to use his nvidia card, not to shut it down.
I saw only one interesting mail about this real issue on this mailing list, and
no one ever answered this mail :
https://lists.launchpad.net/hybrid-graphics-linux/msg00263.html
I hope we hear a lot from this johnny and I really hope he'll succeed.
To sum up for f_dav : so far, no way to use your nVidia card, you can only shut
it down using this acpi_call thing.
