Currently the inx package has the dependency:
msmtp-mta|mail-transport-agent
This should mean that msmtp-mta is preferred when there is no mta
present, but won't be installed if one is.
BTW the way to find out which packages provide a virtual package (such
as mail-transport-agent) is:
$ apt-cache showpkg mail-transport-agent
...
Reverse Provides:
xmail 1.25-3
ssmtp 2.62-1ubuntu3
sendmail-bin 8.14.3-4
nullmailer 1:1.04-1
nbsmtp 1.00-4
msmtp-mta 1.4.13-1build1
masqmail 0.2.21-4
esmtp-run 0.6.0-1
courier-mta 0.60.0-1ubuntu2
citadel-mta 7.37-5
postfix 2.5.5-1
exim4-daemon-light 4.69-5ubuntu2
exim4-daemon-heavy 4.69-5ubuntu2
(note: this is Ubuntu Intrepid)
Cheers, Dave.
